Cognitive psychodynamic therapy.

Cognitive psychodynamic therapy is an approach to counselling which combines insights from cognitive psychology, neuroscience and  psychodynamic therapy.  This results in an approach that recognises that each individual is unique, formed from their own rich tapestry of past experience and relationships.  It recognises that whilst people are often conscious of the things which are troubling them, the patterns which play out in their lives often do so without full awareness.  Cognitive psychodynamic therapy empowers people to  reflect  on their active thought processes, as well as the patterns which play out both at work and at home. The aim is to enable people to use their own inner resources and  experiences to  lead fulfilled and productive lives.

Cognitive psychodynamic therapy is being developed by Dr Tony Ward, associate professor of counselling psychology at the University of the West of England, and Prof. Arnaud Plagnol, professor of psychopathology at Paris 8 University in France.

A book on the approach is due to appear in 2019, to be published by Pagrave McMillan.  A number of current research projects are also being carried out to develop and evaluate the approach.  For example it is being used with clients that experience anxiety and low mood, at Lifespace Counselling.  This is a research clinic at UWE.

As we develop the approach, links to research findings will appear on this page, so keep coming back to check on where we are up to.
